Note: PGA and New Bylaws Now in Effect

On February 5, 2021 ASTTBC officially transitioned to the Professional Governance Act (PGA).

ASTTBC along with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC), the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP), the College of Applied Biology (CAB) and the B.C. Institute of Agrologists (BCIA) are now regulatory bodies identified by the PGA.

The PGA establishes a new, modernized framework for professional regulators in the natural and built environment. Included in this legislation are standards relating the governance of regulatory bodies, role of ASTTBC, setting out ethical principles and responsibilities of its registrants, which is applied consistently among PGA regulators. Registrants of ASTTBC will continue to be held to maintain high standards of conduct and competency, and will have a duty to report among other requirements.

New ASTTBC Bylaws

ASTTBC’s new bylaws are now in effect and therefore information on our website may no longer be current/applicable. We are in the process of updating this information.

Applicants and registrants are required to meet the current requirements, please refer to ASTTBC Bylaws for details.

Thank you for your patience.

If you want to take an ASTTBC accredited CSO training course, please contact the training provider directly for any questions.

After course completion you may apply for registration with ASTTBC.

Initial applications for CSO (Provisional) may bypass the competency based self-assessment at APPLY NOW.

There are three levels of certification:

1. Provisional Construction Safety Officer – CSO (Provisional)
2. Construction Safety Officer – (CSO)
3. Registered Construction Safety Officer – RCSO

1. Provisional Construction Safety Officer – CSO (Provisional)

The Provisional Construction Safety Officer (CSO (Provisional) is the first step towards a career as a safety professional. The Provisional  designation shows the applicant has met the minimum requirements for competency and allows the registrant to then carry the title CSO (Provisional).  All applicants granted registration by ASTTBC will initially receive the CSO (Provisional) designation. Those applicants with a minimum of 2 years of relevant construction safety experience may apply for reclassification to CSO after a minimum of 1 year as a CSO (Provisional), working in the role of construction safety. Those with less than 2 years of relevant construction safety experience must accumulate the necessary experience and apply for reclassification within 5 years.

2. Construction Safety Officer – CSO

The Construction Safety Officer (CSO) is a fully competent and experienced safety professional who is awarded the right to carry the title CSO. This registrant had met all the conditions for reclassification from CSO (Provisional) and maintains registration in good standing as prescribed in ASTTBC Regulation and Policies. There is no requirement for a CSO to reclassify to RCSO.

3. Registered Construction Safety Officer – RCSO

The Registered Construction Safety Officer holds the senior safety designation within the ASTTBC CSO Certification Program and is awarded the right to the title RCSO. This registrant has worked for a minimum of 3 years in the role of a construction safety practitioner, has met all conditions for reclassification from CSO and maintains registration in good standing as prescribed in ASTTBC Regulation and Policies.

4. Who is Eligible for Certification?

Applicants must demonstrate they meet the competency standards and other enrollment criteria. Generally most applicants will have successfully completed a CSO Training Course with one of the ASTTBC accredited trainers. Applicants with other construction safety training will be considered on a case by case basis and may be required to pass a competency exam administered by ASTTBC.
